I’m Cortney — better known as Cort. I’m a former Michigander living in Miami, Florida, with my husband, Shannon, and my high-energy rescue pup, Quinn. (Pictured at right: My beloved Chihuahua Brida, who crossed the rainbow bridge in November 2025.) I have a degree in communication studies from the University of Michigan, where I also studied creative writing and screenwriting. I was a newspaper reporter for more than 11 years (until I opened my small business: three wine bars in southeastern Michigan). Besides being a small business owner, I previously was a regular contributor for Michigan Uncorked and Michigan Wine Country magazine, among other publications.

Since Fall 2023, I’ve worked as a bookseller at Books & Books in Coral Gables, Florida, where I’m now the merchandising manager and a member of the Leadership Team. I’m so proud to be part of an indie bookstore with such a storied history (44 years and counting!) and a fierce mission to promote literacy and fight censorship in South Florida.

In both writing and reading, I gravitate toward upmarket fiction, but I generally love anything with beautiful prose that offers plenty of surprises. My favorite books of the past year include WILD DARK SHORE and ONCE THERE WERE WOLVES by Charlotte McConaghy, THE NAMES by Florence Knapp and SLANTING TOWARDS THE SEA by Lidija Hilje.
